My family joined the ranks of dog owners in July of 2015. We purchased our dog at a local pet store thinking a brand-new puppy would be best for our 2 young children. It certainly didn’t take long for our family to become dog enthusiasts. After careful consideration, this fall we decided to add another dog to our family. But this time we would do something much more rewarding……we would adopt. Soon after, my wife discovered the website Petfinder and we were on our way. If you aren’t familiar with Petfinder, it is an on-line pet-adoption website that lists more than 315,000 adoptable pets from nearly 14,000 animal shelters and rescue groups.
If you and your family are looking to add a furry, four-legged friend, I highly recommend pet adoption. Approximately 7.6 million animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, 3.9 million are dogs, and 3.5 million are cats. While about 2.7 million of these animals will be adopted, unfortunately, another 2.7 million animals are euthanized each year. Thanks to spaying & neutering efforts, as well as no-kill shelters this number is dropping steadily. 40 years ago, more than 20 million dogs and cats were euthanized each year.
There are several animal shelters in the KC metro area, including the Great Plains SPCA in Merriam and Independence, as well as Wayside Waifs in KCMO, and Unleashed Pet Rescue in Mission, KS. If you are or have been thinking about adoption, one great thing is that the animal is usually already microchipped, and spayed or neutered, as well as having already received many of their shots and vaccinations. Because we adopted, we also received significant discounts on pet supplies from area pet stores. We found “Bennie” at Prairie Paws Animal Shelter in Ottawa, KS. It took us less than a few hours, to introduce Bennie to our dog Lucie (to make sure they were compatible), and fill out the necessary paperwork.
For all of you animal lovers out there, adoption isn’t the only way you can help. You can also foster an animal or animals temporarily until a permanent adoption takes place, you can volunteer your time to local animal shelters, or you can even donate to help these shelters with their mounting expenses. Adopting or volunteering at a pet shelter is a win-win, for you and for the pets….So what are you waiting for? Begin your search today!
